The Difference Between PRIMAL & SURVIVAL Foods
The foods we use when preparing for a survival event are not the same foods our ancestors ate long ago to evolve...what's the difference between them?
It has taken me a long time and a lot of trials to figure out what my body needs to feel good. Ever since I made the switch from eating survival foods to strictly primal foods, there has been an undeniable difference in my overall wellbeing. Every meal I eat, I know that I am healing years of destruction from modern “medicine” and foods.
What are Primal Foods?
Primal foods consist of meat, organ meats, raw dairy, fruit, and honey. A nose to tail diet with fruits was what our early ancestors ate and what we evolved on. These are the foods that most humans absolutely thrive on, if given the chance. Most won’t actually give it that chance though, because it’s so different than what we are used to, and it’s hard to give up processed foods because they are designed to be addictive.
Think of hunter/gatherer times. Men hunted their meat and fed their families with it, do you think they let any part of that animal go to waste? Absolutely not. They spent a lot of time and expended a ton of energy on their hunts, from making the kill, hauling it back, to cleaning the carcass. They would use every inch of that carcass in some way to nourish their families.
What are Survival Foods?
When humans started to live a less nomadic life and started to settle in large communities, that is when farming and agriculture started. Obviously, foods that need to be farmed are a lot newer to the human diet than the nose to tail animal diet of our early ancestors.
Survival foods are the foods that your grandma and great grandma fed their families to survive WWI and WWII.
Flour, sugar, beans, canned vegetables from the garden, grains, oatmeal, seeds and nuts. These foods are not very optimal for peak nutrition in humans. I know what you’re thinking, what do you mean - I thought vegetables were healthy?
Something I have learned while eating animal based is that I completely thrive without vegetables. Vegetables contain anti-nutrients, defense chemical compounds, lectins, and are simply hard on our digestive systems. It is the part of the plant that does not want to be eaten - unlike fruit. That’s why most vegetables taste awfully bitter unless we cook them in butter, salt, garlic, and herbs. Do you ever notice how your body cannot break down corn, for example?
Of course, I am not saying that it is wrong if you eat these foods, it’s hard to avoid them in today’s world. If you feel good eating a survival food diet, more power to you. But if you don’t feel good and you are struggling with skin problems, energy levels, mood disorders, hormonal imbalances, gastrointestinal issues, diabetes, and more…these foods may not be doing you any favors.
Why should you eat Primal Foods right now?
As we all know, things in the world are not going well right now — and I believe in always being as prepared as possible.
I write about homesteading and preparedness, and I realize that in hard times, it is not always feasible to eat a primal diet. However, before things in our country get worse, I am using this time now to nourish my body and build up my nutrient stores with the most nutrient dense foods in the world - meat, organs, fruit, raw dairy, honey.
When the inevitable happens and our country is at war again, I know that my family will be in great health because we have been preparing. We will be nourished, and even when we have to start eating survival foods again to make it through hard times, I know that we will be okay because of my effort to prepare our bodies.
Even though I plan to continue eating this way for as long as I can, it’s not to say that I won’t ever eat grains and veggies again. I definitely believe that these foods have their place in our cupboards. That being said, while I am eating PRIMAL foods, I am still focusing on building a prepared pantry full of SURVIVAL foods.
The laws of nature still apply, and the truth of your nutrition will become evident during hard times. SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST.
So, what do you think? Are you going to start eating more PRIMAL foods?
